OKAY, WHAT HAD he missed?

Because one minute he was looking at one amazing behind and envying every rivulet of water that ran down Jessie’s lightly freckled thighs, knowing she was leaving and that he’d been parked firmly in the friend zone, and the next...

She was lowering herself to sit at the pool edge, her bottom lip caught in her teeth and a thousand X-rated wants in her eyes...or at least that was what he thought he was seeing.

‘You know that suggestion you made...?’

‘Which one?’ he asked carefully, his pulse upping a notch.

‘Well, there was the suggestion that I should enjoy more active pursuits, and then there was the other...’

Cheeks reddening, her voice trailed off and he stepped towards her. ‘The other?’

‘The friends thing...’ She swirled her legs in the water as though she couldn’t sit still.

‘What about it?’

He paused before her, reaching out to rest his palms on the smooth stone either side of her thighs, the heat from her skin making his own buzz. Her feet brushed against his board shorts and he clenched his jaw. He wouldn’t be getting out of this pool any time soon...but with any luck she’d come back in and join him.

‘The way I see it we have a couple of nights together if the weather forecast is correct, and you’re right, I should spend more time appreciating the view...’

He nodded, her feet persisting with their teasing caress, her eyes—her eyes were eating him alive...or was that a figment of his overactive and hopeful imagination?

‘And that view...it includes you.’

No, not imagining it at all...

His mouth tilted up at the corner. ‘I’m glad you like what you see.’

‘Don’t be getting cocky, now.’

‘Moi...?’ He would have grinned full-on if he wasn’t fighting to keep his cool. ‘I wouldn’t dare.’

She chuckled softly, one hand reaching out to stroke his hair from his face, the move so gentle and surprising that his pulse skittered, his breath snagged.

‘Good, because I’m tempted by the benefits too.’

‘The friends with benefits?’ Was she truly serious?

She hummed. ‘There’s only one problem...’

‘Which is?’

‘I swore I wouldn’t kiss you first.’

So that was what this was about, his cocky promise again... ‘You did.’

‘And you swore I would.’

‘I did.’ Idiot.

‘So, you see, it’s a bit of a problem for me...’

‘A problem you’d like me to fix?’

She gave him a coy smile, her eyes giving him an evocative look that he was rapidly losing himself to...

‘I’m open to ideas.’

Instinct taking over, he cupped her calves, pulling her legs apart so he could step between them. ‘Now you’re open to ideas.’

Her eyes flashed and his body pulsed. She wasn’t stopping him and slowly, ever so slowly, he lowered his mouth to the inside of her thigh, just above the knee...he grazed her skin with his lips, the tip of his tongue, caught her sharp intake of breath, the way her hands shot to the pool edge to steady herself.

‘These kisses don’t count, right?’

‘No...’ she rasped out. ‘No, they don’t count.’

‘Or these?’

He moved along her thigh, her body trembling
